Crypto payouts are popular with South African funded traders because they’re usually faster and cheaper than international bank transfers. Most firms pay in a stablecoin such as USDT or USDC, which you can sell for rand on a South African exchange.

Converting crypto to rand
- Open and verify an account with a South African crypto exchange such as VALR or Luno.
- Copy your deposit address for the exact coin and network the firm pays on (for example USDT on TRC-20 or ERC-20). Sending on the wrong network can lose the funds.
- Add that address to your prop firm payout settings and request the payout.
- Sell the stablecoin for rand and withdraw to your South African bank account.
Costs to compare
- The firm’s own withdrawal fee, if any.
- The blockchain network fee.
- The exchange’s trading fee and spread when you sell for rand.
- The exchange’s rand withdrawal fee.
Compared with a bank transfer’s SWIFT fee and exchange margin, the total is often lower, especially for larger payouts.
Tax and records
The rand value of the crypto when you receive it is income for SARS. If you hold it and later sell at a different price, that’s a separate event you may need to declare. Keep exchange statements and see prop firm tax in South Africa.
