Why Most Traders Fail Prop Firm Challenges

Most traders who buy a prop firm challenge don’t pass. Usually it isn’t because their strategy has no edge. It’s because they break a risk rule on a bad day. These are the most common reasons and how to fix each one.

1. Risking too much per trade

At 2% risk per trade, three losses break a 5% daily limit. Fix: risk 0.25–0.5% per trade so a normal losing streak stays well inside the limit.

2. Forgetting floating losses

Most daily limits count open trades. A position that’s deep in the red can breach you even if you never close it. Fix: monitor equity, not balance, and set a personal stop at half the daily limit.

3. Revenge trading

After a loss, traders increase size to win it back. Fix: stop for the day after two or three losses.

4. Rushing the target

Most challenges have no time limit, yet traders try to pass in days. Fix: aim for 0.5–1% on good days and let the target come.

5. Trading news without checking the rules

Spreads widen and prices jump around releases, and some firms restrict or discount news trades. Fix: check your firm’s news rules and the economic calendar every morning.

6. Not understanding the drawdown type

With a trailing drawdown, a winning run followed by a normal pullback can breach you. Fix: read our guide to trailing vs static drawdown and take partial profits.

7. Breaking a rule you didn’t read

Consistency rules, minimum days, weekend closes and banned strategies catch traders out. Fix: read the full rules before your first trade; see consistency rules explained.

8. Trading the wrong hours

Trading thin sessions out of boredom leads to poor fills and random results. Fix: trade the sessions your strategy was built on; see the best trading hours in SAST.

FAQ

What is the most common way to fail a challenge?

Hitting the daily loss limit, often through oversized positions or floating losses on open trades.

How can I improve my chances of passing?

Risk 0.25–0.5% per trade, set a personal daily stop, read every rule, and don’t rush the target.
